Yvette is a character in Love Nikki. She used to work as the personal secretary of Nidhogg, the former Prime Minister of the Lilith Kingdom.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

As a civil servant of Lilith Kingdom, modern business attire is Yvette's daily dress. Even though it's just a uniform, cute elements are essential. The coat has lace ornaments with shiny silver buttons. Its checkered black skirt is adorned with a bow. Exquisite fabrics and elegant tailoring add some maturity to sweet Lilith girls.

Now that Yvette wears her modern business attire, she is no longer a little crying girl.

— Yvette's description in the Time Diary

Yvette is a young woman of average height, with green eyes and purple-brown hair. Her dressing style tends to be very elegant and professional, though in one occasion she puts on more revealing military clothes at Nidhogg's request.

Personality[]

Yvette is a faint-hearted, hardworking employee of Nidhogg. She is very timid and shy, but also very naive, sweet and caring. She has an interest in reading, listening to music and flowers. On the other hand she dislikes coffee, carrots, and ghosts.[5] Though she doesn't work as a designer, designing is one of her hobbies.[17]

History[]

Early Life[]

Yvette never knew her parents. Her mother fell in love with someone and left when she was young, leaving her with her grandmother, who devotedly took care of her.[18]

Year 663[]

In her childhood, she was bullied by the other children for being an orphan, especially by a girl named Lori, who always had nicer dresses than Yvette's homemade clothes. While she was alone, she found a magic wand designed by her mother in the attic. Though she did not understand how it worked, it once helped to scare her bullies.[1][19] She kept it until she was an adult, even though her grandmother told her she didn't need her mother.[18]

Year 665[]

Star Moon Covenant

The magic book containing Ryan

For her sixth birthday, Yvette was given a magic book from her grandmother, which had been passed down through her family. It was said that only the purest children could discover the secret of the book, which was an elf known as the Illusion Elf within the book. He appeared in front of her and introduced himself as Ryan, and offered his help so that she could become stronger.[10]

Even though Yvette could see Ryan, nobody else can. He told her that if she became strong enough, she could summon the Dream Light Array and bring him into the world for everyone to see.[20]

Year 670[]

After spending five years with Ryan, Yvette found one day that he was becoming transparent. Though she was sad, he assured her that it was normal and just meant she was growing up.[21] Her grandmother told her that growing up was like filling a blank piece of paper with more colors: still beautiful, but no longer pure.[22]

Year 671[]

By this year, Ryan had grown nearly invisible, though Yvette could still hear him. He explained to her one day that he was going to disappear completely soon, and she became angry at him for leaving her. Ryan did his best to assure her that he'd be with her even if she couldn't talk to him, and promised that one day she could summon him if she was strong enough. As he said goodbye to her, she promised to him that she'd be the best grown-up.[23] She told her grandmother of her desire to summon him again, and her determined attitude rather than being overtaken by sadness impressed her grandmother.[24]

Year 675[]

Yvette became a student of Cicia Design School during this year, barely passing the entry tests. Though she wished she could have done better, she understood nobody could be perfect all the time.[24]

In her second year of school, she was able to summon Ryan again using the Dream Light Array. Though their tearful reunion only lasted for a few minutes, Yvette felt encouraged by her ability to work towards a goal despite her ordinariness.[25]

Year 678[]

After graduating, Yvette quickly became Nidhogg's personal secretary against all odds. Her older sister Kiki was surprised to hear this, given that it was considered a role many girls would love to have, and Yvette was inexperienced. Yvette herself admitted that she did not feel ready for the role, but she resolved herself to do her best.[26]

Her first day of work was a disaster: she took the wrong files, got the time of a meeting wrong, broke the printer, and spilled tea on an important document, as well as her clothes.[27] Yvette went to the stairwell to cry, and wondered if being a secretary wasn't right for her after all. Nidhogg came and summoned her to the lounge. She expressed concern that he would fire her, but he didn't. Instead, he told her she could borrow a dry uniform and told her that her image would be very important in the future.[28]

A month later, the office cleaner mentioned to Yvette that Nidhogg had been meeting more and more with strange guests, having top-secret meetings and not allowing his office to be cleaned. Yvette admitted she hadn't noticed anything herself about such a thing.[29]

Later, her birthday passed and she went to work on that day only to find that Nidhogg was not there. She went into his office, where she saw a box on the desk with a card with a mercenary's logo on the top. She reached for the card, but Nidhogg came in and interrupted her, asking her what she was doing. Startled, she spilled coffee all over it. The box fell onto the floor, and a stuffed rabbit came out of the box. Nidhogg revealed that it was her birthday gift, and that it was called the March Hare, supposedly because she was born in March.[30][14]

Hare and Secret

The March Hare

Yvette loved the rabbit, and talked to it all day, since she didn't have anyone else to share her thoughts with. When she went to sleep that night, the bunny appeared in her dreams. It told her that it could communicate with her this way, and that it was here to help her with styling.[14] It talked with her all night, causing her to be tired the next day. Nidhogg noticed and told her that the bunny was not that good at styling, and that she could throw it out if she wants to.[31]

Despite this, Yvette treasured the rabbit. She made an outfit for it featuring a golden pocket watch, a monocle, and a top hat, inspired by Nidhogg, and submitted it for the Citizen Design Award at the suggestion of Locco. It won, and she was embarrassed by all the attention.[32]

Year 680[]

Yvette and Nidhogg attended a conference together in Cicia during the year in 680 at the same time Nikki, Bobo and Momo were there. She revealed that she was his secretary to them when she ran into them, and subsequently lost a styling battle to Nikki. Nidhogg was disappointed that she took so long due to the battle.[2] The two later proceeded on to Wintermount for the Designer's Tea Party, where they spent time together in the rose garden dedicated to Nidhogg.[33]

Later in the Cloud Empire, Yvette ran into Nikki and her friends again on a cruise ship on the Celestial Lake, this time with Nidhogg with her. Nidhogg proposed another styling battle between the two girls, which Yvette lost again.[34]

Fantasy Styling Contest Rebellion[]

Yvette assisted Nidhogg with the preparations of the Fantasy Styling Contest in Royal City, which he hosted along with Royce.[35] Shortly before the contest began, she lost the magic wand made by her mother, and Nikki helped return it to her.[36]

As the contest began, Yvette noticed the abnormal presence of North soldiers attending. Unaware of Nidhogg's plans to lead them in rebellion, she was confused as to why he kept sending her away. Darkness fell, and the Fantasy Styling Contest turned into chaos. Yvette sought out Nidhogg so that she could find out what to do, still not realizing he was the cause of the chaos. He tried to send her away, but upon realizing they didn't have enough time, he told her to get in the car with him.[37]

They went to the North Kingdom via car, Yvette still confused as to Nidhogg's motivations and Nidhogg frustrated by her questions. She eventually realized what he had done and pleaded with him to go back, but he told her that they could not do anything until they reached North. He also pointed out that the people of Lilith would probably see her as a traitor and that she was likely to be arrested when she returned.[38]

Wand of Time

The wand given to Yvette by her mother

He kept Yvette in a room guarded by North Kingdom guards for several days, where she grew restless. She escaped by winning a styling battle against a guard using her mother's wand.[39] Suddenly a video of her mother began to play from the wand. Her mother told her that she left because she had to do something important and that she only left so that Yvette could be safe. She told Yvette that she loved her before the video ended.[40]

Nidhogg approached her then and reassured her that he was going to send her back the next day, even as she cried for her mother. She asked him if he had been lying to her and Lilith the whole time. He easily admitted that he had, and that he had chosen her as his secretary in order to give himself a better image. However, he reassured her that he wouldn't hurt her, to thank her for her years of shielding him. She told him that she understood, even though she was still crying.[41]

The next morning, Nidhogg sent Yvette home with one of his trusted followers. Before she left, she formally accused him of violating several articles of Lilith and bravely told him that the seven nations would arrest him. He just smiled and said that she ought to go before she cried again. She took one last look at him before leaving.[42] On the car ride home, she cried while thinking about both Nidhogg and her mother. She fell asleep then, and dreamed of her mother, who suggested she start over and get a job in a clothing store. Despite all she had been through, Yvette felt a glimmer of hope for her future.[11]

Hayden's 150th Birthday Ceremony[]

Considering her boss had just led a rebellion against the nation and fled to the North Kingdom, Yvette realized that she didn't exactly have a job when she returned. She was unable to find a new job at first, but soon Neva approached her to tell her that since her record was clean, if she passed a test she could come back to work for the Lilith government somewhere else. Yvette passed the exam with a very high score, indicating how much she had learned over the past few years. After her formal interview, she was assigned to the city of Hayden's municipal government, which was preparing to celebrate the fantasy writer Hayden's 150th birthday.[43]

Fairy Tale Tea

A table full of extra cake in Yvette's office

When she arrived, she soon found that she wasn't given any work. After she volunteered to run errands, she was given small chores, but she wasn't given any real work regarding the birthday ceremony.[44] Even after being encouraged to speak up again by her cousin Kiki, all of her efforts went unrecognized. Frustrated, Yvette went to the minister and laid out a case for why she should help with the Dessert Tower for the ceremony. After some thought, he assigned her the job.[45]

Yvette worked hard to make sure everything went off without a hitch, impressing her coworkers who underestimated her competence.[46] However, there was still a bump in the road when the host of the opening ceremony, Miss Qiss, found her dress unsuitable just a day before the ceremony. After speaking with the designer, Yvette was able to work out all of the issues, and even had the dress modified at the last minute to account for Miss Qiss's unexpected weight loss.[47] The Dessert Tower show ended up being the highlight of the opening ceremony, and Yvette finally felt happy for the first time after returning from North.[48]

Before Miss Qiss left, she gave Yvette an old picture of her and Nidhogg together, from when they had been investigating the Phantom Thief of the December Troupe. Though Yvette was surprised to receive such a photo, looking back at it helped her realize she didn't need Nidhogg anymore.[3]

Arrest Warrant of Nidhogg[]

Yvette began work as a diplomat, and soon learned from the Acting Prime Minister that little had been done to deal with Nidhogg's rebellion. She asked what she could do to help, and the Acting Prime Minister, feeling she was qualified, gave her an important task: negotiating with the Court of the Seven Kingdoms to pass a joint arrest warrant against Nidhogg.[49]

The Acting Prime Minister's secretary, Ivetta, was assigned to help her with the task. Though Ivetta had many more qualifications than Yvette did, both women got along well. She revealed that her goal was to become a judge of the Court of the Seven Kingdoms, and that helping Yvette with the assignment would help her learn more.[4]

Yvette found the other diplomats generally uncooperative, preferring to talk only about what Nidhogg had done rather than what they could do to secure an indictment against Nidhogg at the Court of the Seven Kingdoms.[50] She finished the plan on her own, and the Court of the Seven Kingdoms accepted the case.[51]

After she and Ivetta reported to the Acting Prime Minister, they overheard several people outside the conference building discussing Nidhogg's betrayal, under the impression that Queen Nanari had been kidnapped by Nidhogg. One of them confidently stated that they always knew that Nidhogg was scum, even before the rebellion. The other stranger remarked that they believed Nidhogg could have done some good as well, even though he was a traitor, but they were immediately shut down.[52]

As the strangers walked away, Yvette admitted that she didn't agree with their assessment of Nidhogg: while he had been Prime Minister, his demeanor had been totally different, and she had admired him. Despite this, she recognized that he wasn't that man anymore, and that they had chosen different paths.[52] Unbeknownst to her, Ivetta recorded this statement using a recording pen.[53]

League Till

The logo of League Tyr

Yvette and Ivetta took a train to the Court of the Seven Kingdoms for the trial. At one stop, Ivetta received an envelope which she claimed was from her family; however, Yvette noticed the seal of the League Tyr on it. While Ivetta was asleep, Yvette opened the letter and read it, discovering Ivetta had been taking commands from Nidhogg.[54]

At the hearing, Yvette presented her case against Nidhogg clearly and concisely. However, after she was finished, she also brought up an indictment against Ivetta, using the letter as evidence that Ivetta had been colluding with Nidhogg. However, Ivetta claimed the letter was a forgery. She then turned the accusation back on Yvette, playing back the recording she had taken on her pen where Yvette said that she admired Nidhogg, but cutting it off before the part where Yvette condemned Nidhogg's actions.[53]

Despite Yvette's protestations that the recording was taken out of context, the Court of the Seven Kingdoms believed that the recording, combined with the fact that she had been Nidhogg's secretary for years and that she hadn't been harmed when she went with him to North, meant that she should be suspected. She was unable to prove her innocence, even though the recording on its own didn't prove that she was colluding with Nidhogg, and even though she was unable to prove an absence of communication. As Yvette was taken to the defendant stand, she yelled out that she was guilty only of admiring and respecting Nidhogg, just like everybody else in the courtroom that he had misled, and that she would not betray her past.[55]

Yvette and Ivetta were both taken to detention cells in the Court of the Seven Kingdoms. Ivetta took the opportunity to taunt Yvette, her kind demeanor gone, and insinuated that she was useless and naive.[9] She also revealed that her real name was Ozeca and that she would fight alongside Nidhogg, before being taken back to the North Kingdom by him. Alone, Yvette had nothing to do but think about Ozeca's words and the words of the court, wondering what she could possibly do when nobody trusted her. She realized then that she could only rely on herself.[56]

Glavier[]

While Yvette was being escorted by soldiers following her accusation, a fight broke out at a border station, and Yvette's leg was wounded. An old hunter from the mountain town of Glavier rescued Yvette, and she was taken to live among them while she recovered. However, the people there were bad at styling and did not have many resources, and Yvette began to make small handicrafts in order to make more money for them.[57]

While she was there, the teacher of the tribe, an old designer named Prucius, was kidnapped by soldiers of Duke Dimitry, who were looking for Prince Bran of North after his father's death. When Yvette and the other adults of the tribe heard about this, they leapt into action in order to try and save Prucius. Though they considered resorting to violence at first to take down the soldiers, Yvette pointed out that the soldiers didn't seem to want to kill Prucius and suggested they challenge them to styling battles.[57]

Unfortunately, one of the men, Alexander, lost the first styling battle. He was tied up by the soldiers, leaving Yvette and the others unsure of what to do next. They argued over whether to save Alexander or Prucius, with most of the adults believing Prucius was more "valuable". When it became clear that the other people of Glavier were willing to put their own comrades in life-threatening danger to save Prucius, Yvette spoke up. She explained that all lives were equal, whether someone was a designer or not, and that they couldn't exchange lives like they wanted to.[57]

Heavens Hidden Pathway 3

She came up with a non-lethal plan of using fireworks to distract the soldiers, and she attached them to the March Hare she had once been given by Nidhogg. With this, they were able to successfully save both Prucius and Alexander, though Prucius was hit by a bullet.[57]

Yvette, inspired by her experiences with the people of Glavier and a strong believer in the fact that all lives were equal regardless of styling talent, decided to open a school called the Fair Future College. It was created with the philosophy that students with different talents and abilities should be able to show who they were, and it offered courses on things like agriculture and handicrafts. Prucius also joined as a staff member of the school. Though the college's concept was criticized by the press, Yvette took their criticisms into account in order to improve the school.[6]

Relationships[]

Nidhogg[]

Yvette works as Prime Minister Nidhogg's personal secretary. She is not very good at it, both in administrative duties and in fashion duels. She is shown to have mixed thoughts on him: on one hand she doesn't like it when he teases her (which he does, and a lot), but on the other she strongly admires him for his dedication and talent. She relies on him a lot and struggles once she finds herself alone.

Nidhogg is a very strict boss. However, he doesn't apply this as harshly to Yvette, though he scolds her verbally when she messes up, polices how she dresses, and sometimes teases her about her liking him.

It is strongly implied that Yvette did fall in love with Nidhogg, or at least the version of him before he betrayed her and the Lilith Kingdom. She compares him to the man her mother fell in love with, who was also said to be a bad person.[11] After she returns to Lilith, though, she finds success and happiness without him, and realizes that she doesn't need him anymore.[3] She accepts that he isn't the person she admired anymore, but refuses to discard her past, and rather grow from it.[55]

Kiki[]

Kiki is a businesswoman from the Lilith Kingdom and Yvette's older cousin.[12] She's an outspoken and kind woman who cares a lot for her cousin and worries quite a bit for her sake.

When Yvette was taken by Nidhogg after the Fantasy Styling Contest, a very worried Kiki ran into Nikki, Bobo, Ace and Momo before they took off to the Republic of Wasteland and told them what she knew about Yvette's bonds with Nidhogg and the March Hare that he gave to Yvette.[13]

Ryan[]

Yvette considered Ryan her best friend, and even though he teased her a bit when she was a kid, they spent five years of her childhood together. Yvette's lonely childhood may have also contributed to why she felt so strongly for Ryan.

Neva[]

Neva and Yvette used to be co-workers when Yvette was working for the Lilith government. When Yvette first returned to the Lilith Kingdom and was out of her secretary job, it was Neva that reached out to her and told her about the exam allowing her to become a worker of the Lilith government again.[43]
