I found the abstruse books Yilian used to read and spent all my days in front of the desk reading them. I asked myself again and again, what would Yilian do if she was here?
Days went by and I was no longer the child I had been. I treated every visitor with tenderness and elegance like Yilian did, and made notes with a handwriting as beautiful as hers, and signed a name that didn't belong to me.
Finally, one day, Prince Kloris visited the forest, and he asked me a question.
'Rachel, do you remember who you are?'
'Who's Rachel? I'm Yilian, the guardian of the forest epic.'
When I was saying this, I never thought I would meet her that night.
After all this time, she finally showed up in the forest again, wearing her favorite dress as usual. We stared at each other for quite a while. To my surprise, she didn't smiled [sic] for our reunion. Instead, she seemed quite concerned. All of a sudden I felt so ashamed to face Yilian, because I was not her but just a weak child. This weakness has caused me to lose myself, and even made her worry about me.
However, Yilian said nothing and just opened the Tome of Time. A solemn epic was then chanted, showing the history of the Reflected City, the Pigeon Forest and the past of those on the tombstones. Finally the chanting came to an end. With the power of the tome running out, she disappeared in my arms again. A rain of tears dropped onto my knees on the ground.
Winds blew through the forest suddenly. It swept through the flowers and leaves, rustling, as if lives were singing a song.
On Yilian's dress, all those flowers each stand for someone who is worth being memorized or a story that should be remembered, as she said. I had a green dress which looked the same as hers, so I started to carve all the proven history onto the tombstones, just like what she did on the Tome of Time. Each word here stands for a part of the history that should not be forgotten, and they would become a guide to our history for the descendants.
Countless words have been carved in the forest, and their lights will keep the place from darkness forever. I won't let her down. The epic of the forest will not be forgotten as long as I'm still alive.
Days have gone by along with the twitter in summer and the fallen leaves in autumn, and finally winter is over. It's spring now. New shoots are growing under the tombstones, and the whole forest is full of fresh lives.
'We record the history so that we won't make the same mistakes again, and all lives can be treated equally.' Back when she told me this, I could see depression from her eyes.
Now I'm looking forward to the day when we will meet again and she will stay. Maybe we'll just go boating on Lake Povali like we used to do, enjoying the scene with falling petals and white swans. By that time I will tell her our past is written right in the history, and we can head for bright future together.
