Dialogue[]

  • (The trial of the Queen's kidnappers is set to be held in the largest square in City Oren. Hundreds of civilians are required to attend this first public trial held by the Queen.)
  • (The announcement shakes the whole Pigeon Kingdom. The entire country speculates that this will signify the beginning of an even more tyrannical rule by the Queen.)
  • (On the trial day, other than the audience who are required to be present, many nosy folks also hurry to the venue to witness this historic event.)
  • (In the square, the trial takes place in the statutory order under the kingdom's stele, a symbol of peace and unity. The two principal offenders plead not guilty throughout.)
  • (Civilians watch behind the line drawn by the guard, whispering. Elle turns a deaf ear to them, sitting silently on the side, while Ace stays by her, her sword by her waist.)
  • (Halfway through the trial, a scream bursts out in the crowd. The spectators part to create a path, through which Duke Derrick heads to the square's center with three nobles.)
  • Elle: Look who's here, even Duke Derrick has been drawn by this trial. I'm sorry we haven't reserved a seat for you.
  • Draco: Your Majesty, no one deserves to be here more than I do. With respect, you ought to release these two whose crimes you've imposed without proof, but not humiliate them publicly.
  • Elle: As the victim, is my statement not strong enough proof?
  • Draco: Your Majesty, I'm afraid you still don't see my point. How can you prove these two are the real culprits of your kidnapping? On behalf of the public, I'm asking you for proof.
  • Elle: I myself am proof. The Royal City's guard can also testify.
  • Draco: No, no, no. They all belong to your faction. As the case happened in a village, we need to hear what civilians have to say, not your 'impartial statement'.
  • Noble A: The people of the Pigeon Kingdom have remained obedient for years. When you levied heavy taxes on them, they tolerated it. When you extended the labor hours, they endured it.
  • Noble B: To sustain her unrealistic ideals, how many civilians' lives has our Queen destroyed unthinkingly?
  • Noble C: As the Queen torments the people, Duke Derrick, who's a member of the royal family, prays tirelessly in the Kingdom Monastery for the lessening of the people's pain.
  • Noble A: If only... the one who ascended the throne had been...
  • Ace: What did you say?
  • Draco: Shut up!
  • (The noble doesn't dare finish, but his implication is blatant, stirring up heated talks among the spectators.)
  • Draco: Your Majesty, my dear niece, I believe this has all been a mere understanding. They are innocent and deserve freedom.
  • (Derrick's voice is gentle and kind as an older relative advising a child.)
  • (Only Elle knows that these words are the hisses a venomous snake makes before charging at its prey, meaning to be taken as a pure threat.)
  • (Placidly, she picks up the cup of black tea in front of her and begins slowly.)
  • Elle: I see today is not a good day for the trial. Ace, arrange for their transport back to the prison.
  • (Derrick narrows his eyes. Being ignored by Elle has ignited his indignation bottled up all these years.)
  • Draco: I said, give them freedom!
  • (As Derrick raises his voice, several surrounding guards turn their spears toward Elle and Ace on cue. It turns out that Derrick has planted his own men in the guard.)
  • (Ace draws her sword, shielding Elle with the shiny, sharp blade. Having mistaken that Queen Elle is going to kill her uncle to save face, the civilians begin screaming fearfully.)
  • (As the tension reaches its peak, Acheson arrives hastily with several figures.)
  • (Derrick's hands become fists when he recognizes their faces. He has sent men to monitor the village, but he hasn't been able to forestall Acheson who's closer with the people.)
  • (Derrick glares at Acheson viciously. Acheson stands next to the Queen and greets her.)
  • Acheson: The witnesses are here.
  • Villager A: I can testify that those two reached out to us. At first, they grumbled about the Queen. Then... One day, they told me if the Queen was gone, we'd be given a good life.
  • Villager B: He told me the same thing and offered us plenty of goodies and benefits... We only wished for a good life for our families...
  • Acheson: The valuables they used to bribe the villagers have been examined. Several gold bars are imprinted with Duke Derrick's coat of arms. Do you have anything else to say, Duke Derrick?
  • (Confronted with solid evidence, Derrick begins sweating on his temples, but he can do nothing other than feign calmness.)
  • (The two principal offenders who have been silent the whole time suddenly begin struggling violently, shouting Derrick's name.)
  • Pock-marked Face: Derrick, you've promised us. Once Queen Elle and Princess Ace are expelled from the Royal City, you'll be king, and we'll have all the wealth and power we desire!
  • Scar-faced Villager: And now you want to leave us to die? Bastard, I'll make sure you come with me to hell!
  • (The crowd bursts into shocked bewilderment. Ace calls for the guards Elle has stationed around the square to surround Derrick.)
  • (The scepter symbolic of the throne firm in her hand, Elle stands before Derrick and begins the real trial.)
  • Elle: Derrick, are you plotting treason?
  • (Now, Derrick realizes any more struggle will be in vain, his aristocratic lackeys shrieking to clear their names. The Queen's face seems blurred to him, her purple hair familiar.)
  • (His own hair had been the same color in his youth, so is his elder brother's in his memories.)
  • (How long had it been since his elder brother, the revered late King, stood holding the scepter before the throne so unobtainable to Derrick?)
  • (He can recall no longer.)
  • (Only the brilliance of the gem on the scepter is drawing him closer, step by step, toward the abyss.)
  • Draco: I only want to take back what should have belonged to me.
  • (Elle eyes the man before her as all the shrewdness in him evaporates, leaving only a downcast frame.)
  • (As a child, she was wary of him; as a grown-up, she is still cautious of him. But right now, she only finds her uncle, blinded by his hunger for power, utterly pathetic.)
  • (His world is occupied only by his greed for power. He can no longer see the warm smiles of family and friends, or hear the people's real wishes.)
  • (Elle glances at her sister shoring up her side and sees Nikki's concerned gaze. She holds back the harsh punishment, deciding against sowing fear in the people for authority.)
  • Elle: Duke Derrick, you've repeatedly meddled in state affairs and disrespected the throne. You'll be stripped of your dukedom immediately and detained in the Kingdom Monastery to repent.
