Trefoil is a graphic form composed of the outline of three overlapping rings used in architecture and Christian symbolism. The term is also applied to other symbols of three-fold shape. In the suit, trefoil is used to refer to the shape of clovers, as they have three leaves, and quatrefoil[2] is used to refer to the shape of four-leaf clovers.
Footnotes[]
[1] Dicotyledon was one of the two groups in which all flowering plants or angiosperms were formerly divided. The name refers to one of the typical characteristics of the group, namely that the seed has two embryonic leaves or cotyledons.
[2] Conversely to trefoil, a quatrefoil is a decorative element consisting of a symmetrical shape which forms the overall outline of four partially overlapping circles of the same diameter.
