Interpretation[]
Rose Elegy takes place in a town somewhere with an academy and a bell tower, following Rayes. She lived her short youth there, where the wind chants from bells, spring flowers and winter snow passed by. Compared to vigorous spring and lush summer, she preferred winter for its sobriety; it granted her more inspirations that way. At the academy, Rayes was the best among her peers. She carefully collected her favorites (what exactly is omitted) but for whatever reason, the others could hardly fathom why.
One day during a winter night with thick snow covering the ground, Rayes hurriedly scribbled down designs in her dream on a parchment. When she woke up, she still had the great idea in her mind and went to crafting it. Thorny Rose, Crown Cross; layers of black veils and thrilling red roses adorned her design. The others didn't like her design, yet they couldn't deny its beauty.
When the work was done, red snowflakes fell and flocks of ravens hovered above; people could see what was beyond this world. In panic, the dean put the clothes on fire. Mournful wail resounded in the sky: 'It's a demon's lament!' the people cried. The academy blamed everything on Rayes, even though she was "so innocent." What exactly that means is vague as she was the one who created the designs. A more logical conclusion would be that she was "innocent" in the sense that she had no intention to cause any harm. Nonetheless, in she to her only friend in desperation, but when she woke up the next day, she only found her friend begging the dean to take away the demon from her home. Thus, on the edge of the forest where the solemn bell tower stood—where dust stirred by the bell rings—she was locked up. In silence, she repeatedly heard the sentences of crimes she never committed. The dean proudly acclaimed, 'Integrity and justice prevail. We've bought judgement to the evil!'
Chained up by thorny roses, she could only dream about the short youth she had where she created her own "truth" in the nights. The "truth" might refer to how the designs were true to her in her dreams, being her own creations.
One theory suggest that Rayes suffers from parasomnia, which causes her to make designs in her sleep. As they are made when sleeping, they are strange and terrifying to those around her. She is therefore chained up in order to prevent her from moving while sleeping and creating more of those designs.
