Interpretation[]

Pumpkin Kaidan is about a girl named Hildr who tells kaidan (ghost stories) to children each year. Before the kids arrive, she sprinkles glowing powder on the bats' wings. She tells the stories under the biggest tree of the garden, and the setting with pumpkin lanterns and autumn wind creates the perfect setting for her stories, one being the illusion of a cold winter night. Her vivid way of storytelling, including making grimacing faces, meant that many children were drawn to her.

During her youth, Hildr met a boy of her age. The two wore costumes imitating the plot of the kaidan. After helping the last kid wear the ghost headwear, Hildr and the boy smiled and began to tell ghost stories. They promised to meet again, but next year, he never showed up. He didn't return until the 4th year after he disappeared, holding a pumpkin lantern. Many strange things had happened under the tree, but the reunion of her and the boy was the most amazing one in her heart. After he returned—when the story ended—Hildr would hold the boy's hand and walk into the crowd of the Halloween ceremony as usual.

P BulletJP: "Kaidan" (怪談, sometimes transliterated as "kwaidan") is a Japanese word consisting of two kanji: 怪 (kai) meaning "strange, mysterious, rare, or bewitching apparition" and 談 (dan) meaning "talk" or "recited narrative."[1] In its broadest sense, "kaidan" refers to any ghost story or horror story; though the word was most commonly used during the Edo period of Japan.
The same is done for the Chinese version with the last two characters being 怪谈 (guàitán) which can be translated to "Unbelievable".
P BulletOther: Between kaidan and guàitán, the meaning becomes "An unbelievable story".
