Interpretation[]
Zhao is a young girl who's always had a close relationship with her father, a general in the army. He's known for adoring his daughter and doing everything in his power to make her happy. They reunite each year around New Year and take part in the Lantern Festival celebration together, disguising themselves as ordinary people. This tradition has a special place in the girl's heart, more than any material gift; but she only ever observes the lanterns left by others, as she has no wishes herself.
When Zhao is 15 years old, her father does not return due to the invasions targetting the Cloud Empire. His letter home only contains the word "Zhao" — meaning "bright", — reminding the girl that while she's the light of his life, his duty is to protect the light of the Empire. That year, Zhao sends off a floating lantern for the first time, wishing for peace.
