Gentle Toona is about a camellia growing in a cold place. It hated the cold but endured it anyway, until a girl came and kept it company, even giving it the name Gentle Toona one day. While its attitude towards her was unfriendly, it appreciates her and holds her in high regards; it wishes it could use its life to return the kindness.
Toona is a genus in the mahogany family, Meliaceae. The species Toona sinensis is prevalent in eastern and southeastern Asia. It is by far the most cold-tolerant species in the Meliaceae family, which is possibly the reason why the girl named the camellia Gentle Toona.
Tsundere (ツンデレ) is a Japanese term for a character development process that describes a person who is initially cold (and sometimes even hostile) before gradually showing a warmer, friendlier side over time.
